| I have a lovely friend (who is probably the only person who will read this) who insists I write about my last trip to Washington D.C.
It happened almost by accident because I live in Missouri (A boring place in comparison). I ha e a great brother who happens to work for the Leadership Institute. We had talked off and on about me coming to visit sometime but so far there wasn't a convenient reason for me to go. So one day I'm in the bookstore and the phone rings. It's John, I'm lik,e "hey John, Want to talk to mom and dad (He usually calls to talk to my mom)". Anyway he said he was actually calling to talk to me (yeah and I;m like "Since when do you call to talk to me??"). So he asked me if I would like to come visit him for a few days and I'm like sure. So it turns out that Emily (a good friend of John's) just happened to be driving through St. Louis on her way to D.C. and if I wanted to I could ride along with her and then fly back after a few days. It sounded great now I just had to get my parents to agree with the plan. My mother did not like the idea of her daughter flying back alone from D.C. to St. Louis but after some persuasion agreed that I could go if I really wanted too. So Emily and I left Wednesday morning. We arrived in at Joanie's house at about midnight Wednesday. We visited Mount Vernon Thursday and Thursday evening we went to the Cheesecake factory with John and Joanie (another friend of all of us from LI). At the Cheesecake factory John mentioned that LI was going to have a booth at FRC's Washington Briefing event starting tomorrow (I had received e-mails about the event and thought it looked cool but I wasn't going to be anywhere near D.C. when it was going to take place). Since I didn't have plans other than going sight seeing with Emily it worked out for me to ride with Joanie to LI where John would arrange for one of his co-workers (Gretchen who was going over to the conference) to take me with her on the Metro. At the conference I decided to test the security and see if I could go in with out a name badge.

| I went to the Ameristar casino for the first time Wednesday night. Most events
you go to you get a cheap sticker name tag with a generic "Hi my name
is..." Not Ameristar they had very nice brass name tags with magnetic
backings(It looked like a work name tag" They are building a new hotel
resort and suites so my Mom and I were invited to the topping off
ceremony. It's amazing how much money they must have. You wouldn't
believe the chocolates and deserts... Anyway we had a fun time. We
sat next to a lady who is a member of the star club. When we asked her
what you have to do to be a star member we found out you have to spend
$320,000 a year to get in the club. Sounds great but what happens when
she gets to be 70 and the money her husband left her is gone. She
could become like the many senior citizens who end up living solely off
social security.

| So the ice storm coated just about everything with ice.

This is an elm tree that was in our backyard. It was already
about half dead so it is actually good that it came down anyway.

| Okay, So the Chick project failed. But we did learn a bit from it. We
are also going to try it again in the middle of February. There is
also a small chance we could get dairy goat kids.
Here are a few thoughts about chicken keeping.
1. Hawks and Foxes are always watching for an easy meal.
2. It would be better not to let the chickens out of the pen in the
first place then to let them out and forget to put them back when you
are done.
3. Chickens are fun to watch. |
